Rejoice, foodies! There is some good news for you all! The loads of excitement for KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) lovers started recently with the launch of the all-new KFC ‘Chizza’. The most extraordinary thing ever to happen to KFC’s signature hot and crispy chicken fillet with crispy toppings, yummy molten cheese, signature pizza sauce but surprisingly, no crust at all! Flavored with condiments like oregano and chilli flakes, the Chizza is a chicken lover’s dream come true.

The food giant unveiled its new product ‘Chizza’ in India last month, which is a combination of pizza and KFC’s trademark fried chicken. The pizza base has been bumped off though, to be replaced by pure chicken. It is like eating both – a pizza and KFC fried chicken in one bite. Chizza is priced at Rs. 169 plus taxes, and is available at all KFC stores across the country.

Commenting on the launch of the product, Rahul Shinde, General Manager, KFC India said – “At KFC, it has been our constant endeavour to offer customers something new, exciting and craveable, the Chizza is all that and much more. We are definitely excited to launch this product in the Indian market and cannot wait to see the excitement of our customers. The idea was to come up with something innovative, while sticking to our core of fried chicken. And Chizza offers chicken lovers the taste of our signature Hot and Crispy Chicken in the most innovative format ever. We truly hope that our customers love this brand new innovation from KFC.”

KFC’s Chief Food Innovation Officer Praneet Singh further added – “Innovation is in our DNA,” said Singh, who has been behind several KFC India innovations in the last decade. “We pay a lot of attention to innovation and that is a global mandate that we have. KFC is trying to maintain a balance between its evergreen products like Zesty Chicken and Zinger Burger, and some innovative offerings from time to time. Also, there will be a certain tweaking of flavours, that will be done to make it more adaptable to the Indian palette.”

He clarified that Chizza is not an attack on pizza. “Yes, pizzas are consumed. But at the end of it, there is so much bread and limited amount of toppings. We are a company that stands for 100% real chicken. So, we thought – ‘let us do something unique.’ And hence came a combination of chicken and cheese, which is the best combination we could have. Chizza took about six months time to reach our plates since the idea was first floated.”

When served piping hot, the cheese and chicken combo is lovely and delicious. The melting cheese wrapped over the crispy chicken crust that KFC always does so well. Bits of veggies give it a pizza topping feel. The downside though, is that the hot cheese also turns the chicken crust soggy after a while, giving it a rather doughey taste. And, should you leave your Chizza aside for a couple of minutes, the whole thing becomes quite unappetising. The cheese hardens, the crust becomes soggy and the chicken gets cold.

Though, it must be said, the dish is sure to excite enough chicken and fast-food lovers, atleast initially.
